Epoxy vs Polyaspartic vs Garage Floor Paint: Which Wins in Great Falls?

In chinook country the answer is not one product but a stack: epoxy for the build, polyaspartic for the surface, and paint for nothing.
Three products, three different jobs
Garage floor paint is the box-store option: thin, water-based epoxy or one-part acrylic rolled over concrete that was etched, at best. It is a few mils of film with no build. A 100 percent solids epoxy is a two-part resin with nothing that evaporates, so it goes down thick and stays thick. One manufacturer's sheet gives a 3-gallon batch 15 to 25 minutes of pot life, wants the slab between 50 and 90 degrees F, goes tack free in 4 to 5 hours and asks for concrete at least 28 days old ground to CSP 2 to 3.
Polyaspartic is a fast-curing aliphatic polyurea. One data sheet lists a working time of 10 to 15 minutes at 70 degrees F and 50 percent humidity, walk-on in 3 to 4 hours, a recoat window of 2 to 24 hours, 24-hour return to service and a low-temperature cure down to 25 degrees F. It is UV stable and resists hot-tire pickup. The tradeoff is the clock: each mix has to be on the floor in a quarter of an hour.
What a Great Falls floor is actually up against
Score the three against the local loads. Freeze-thaw: 166 nights a year at or below 32 degrees F and 20.7 at or below zero, crossed constantly rather than once, because a chinook can move the air 40 degrees in an afternoon. Brine: MDT has used liquid magnesium chloride as its primary deicer since 1988, and a 22 percent solution stays liquid to 28 below zero, so it arrives on the floor wet. Grit: the state buys over a billion pounds of sanding abrasives a year, and what rides home in the tread is sandpaper. Heat: 21.7 days at or above 90 degrees F bring tires home hot. Sun: low winter light and snow glare pour through south-facing doors.
Paint fails every line. It has no build to bury grit, no anchor to survive the cycling, softens under a hot tire and yellows in the sun stripe. Epoxy alone carries build and bond well but plain epoxy is not UV stable. Polyaspartic alone is tough, clear and cold-tolerant, but its short working time makes it a poor thick base coat and the first layer needs to be the one chemically anchored into ground concrete.
Why the winner is a stack, not a product
The system that lasts in Cascade County uses each product where it is strongest. A 100 percent solids epoxy base coat, anchored into diamond-ground concrete, carries the build. A full broadcast of vinyl flake or quartz adds texture, thickness and camouflage for winter grit. A polyaspartic or urethane topcoat contributes the properties the climate attacks: abrasion resistance against gravel and studs, chemical tolerance against magnesium chloride and UV stability against the glare. That is what a garage floor coating built for this climate looks like on paper. Thin single-product treatments skip at least one layer, and the skipped layer is always the one the winter tests first.
Flake, solid color or metallic
The broadcast decides how the floor looks and how it hides. Full flake is the garage default because a blended flake reads as clean with a week of grit on it. Quartz does the same job with more grip for shops and wash zones. A solid-color floor is the simplest to install and the least forgiving to live with; every brine ring and grit scratch shows. Metallic epoxy is the showpiece decorative system for a basement, a showroom or a heated garage used as living space, and it wants a flat slab, still air and a topcoat.

Great Falls air is drier than that most of the summer, which helps, but the slab is the variable: a chinook week does not warm concrete, and a floor that spent the week at ten below stalls the cure. A surface thermometer on the slab, not a forecast, decides whether the one day happens.
Recoat the old floor or strip it
A coating that is still tight and merely dull in the tire lanes can be scuffed and topcoated, renewing the wear surface for a fraction of a new install. Paint is different: a new system bonds to whatever is under it, and bonding to paint means bonding to the weakest layer on the floor. Old paint, sealers and curing compounds come off under diamond grinding before anything else goes down.
